McKenzie Ariana Kerry currently holds the title of Miss Iowa USA. She told KCCI, “Every time I put on my sash or my crown, it becomes a little more real.”

The 25-year-old native of Des Moines made history in June by becoming the second Black woman to win the title in the more than 70-year history of the pageant. The first Black woman to win the Miss Iowa title was Cheryl Adrienne Browne Hollingsworth in 1970.

Even before her latest accomplishments, Kerry competed in pageants for three years before representing Central Iowa in the most recent competition.

She highlighted the importance of her success, saying, “When we think about the figures and faces of our community, I think it’s important that Black women and Black girls can have someone that they look up to. I’m honored to represent myself and my Black history.”

The beauty queen prepared for her big moment for months and received support from Ankeny jeweler Aminna Taylor, the owner and founder of jewelry brand Twenty-Eight Minna, who complemented Kerry’s appearance with a simple pair of gold mesh hoop earrings.

Taylor is an independent businesswoman who started her brand from the ground up two years ago. Her earrings are now the focus of attention. She hailed Kerry’s decision to wear her jewelry as an important milestone for her little business.

Kerry has been using her platform to elevate Black-owned businesses. “Being able to support the community is awesome but also being able to support a Black woman who is hustling and grinding who has truly created an incredible product is amazing too,” Kerry said. “I think we all have the power to elevate the things we care about and to bring other people with us.”

Per the Des Moines Register, in addition to receiving thousands of dollars in prizes and honors as Miss Iowa, Kerry now gets the chance to compete for the national title (Miss USA title) on Sunday, August 4.
