Through entertainment, the black community has been able to prove that it cannot be suppressed or stopped. The Maroons of the Caribbean held on to their African heritage through music; Africans on the continent created African popular music during colonization and the African American community created a new wave in the entertainment industry through the Harlem Renaissance. The legacy of black entertainers is not a new phenomenon.
