Afrobeats princess, Tems has announced her debut album, dubbed Born in the Wild on April 15, a day after her spectacular Coachella performance, performing the Billboard Hot 100 No. 9 Essence remix.

The songwriter and producer teased her album, which will be out in May, with a one-minute video that she uploaded. The video appears to depict images from Tems’ early years, with kids playing on the beach, maybe representing events from her hometown.

“It’s all over the news, all over the news, I notice/ Under the sun, struggling to find my focus/ When I was young, younger than my mind as always/ Runnin’ away,” she sang in the video.

Tems released Me & U and Not an Angel, two solo songs, towards the end of last year. In March, she made her debut performing Not an Angel at Billboard Women in Music, where she also took home the Breakthrough Award.

It can be recalled that Tems had been holding a private listening session for the new album in Lagos, Nigeria. Posting snippets of the gathering recently, she thanked fans and well-wishers who continue to support her project.

It is not clear, which month this year the fresh sounds will drop, but following her impressive track record throughout the years, fans can only expect a well-rated compilation of soothing rhythms.

Tems was recently on the list of award recipients at the NAACP Image Awards, held last month in the United States. The award is organised by the U.S-based National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People which honours outstanding performances in film, television, music, theatre, and literature.

It was the second trophy in March for the Me and U singer, who has previously grabbed the ‘Breakthrough’ award at the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards.

Tems became the first Nigerian artist to be honoured at the Billboard Women in Music event, which celebrates outstanding women who continue to inspire generations in the industry.

In addition to her well-performing records, she has been celebrated for attaining over two billion streams on Spotify, and becoming the most streamed female African artiste on the platform.

The outstanding talent in music, who is using music as an “outlet to express her thoughts,” could certainly compile potential award-winning songs as the untitled new album is finalised.
