Burger King has rewarded a worker for his hard work. Mykale Baker’s actions came into focus when he went directly to work after walking across the stage to receive his high school diploma.
He was still wearing his graduation medals, ready to serve burgers and fries at Burger King, and smiling as he filled orders, which drew the attention of Maria Mendoza, who was celebrating watching her daughter, Daisy, graduate, and had stopped for a snack.
She was surprised to see Baker, another new graduate, working behind the counter. She was even more shocked to learn later that the teen wasn’t even supposed to work that evening, but he immediately stepped in to assist when he saw the orders backing up on the screen following graduation.
She told 11 Alive at the time, “He was so kind, so polite. Radiating joy, even after such a big day. His dedication and quiet strength really moved me. I felt called to do something to recognize that.”
His work ethic impressed Mendoza, who started a GoFundMe to assist Baker in covering his college expenses. Since then, the fundraising total has exceeded $190,000.
In addition, Burger King and the Burger King Foundation surprised him with a $10,000 scholarship toward his education.
A communications firm that shared the news with 11 Alive said the special moment was shared with him at the restaurant while he was surrounded by his Burger King team.
The foundation also wanted to recognize Mendoza’s generosity, as she helped amplify Baker’s story with the fundraiser.
The foundation awarded her daughter, a recent graduate, a $10,000 scholarship to support her studies in neuroscience.
