A California man has been arrested for the murder and torture of his girlfriend’s 8-year-old daughter. Clint Mason, 38, has been charged with first-degree murder, torture and willful cruelty, the Kern County Superior Court website states, according to the Bakersfield Californian.

Mason was arrested at a motel in Inlgewood on March 19 and he is being held without bail. The day before his arrest, officers found the victim, Ger’mya Amirah Alexander, in an apartment on San Dimas Street after they received a report of the 8-year-old not breathing, 23ABC reports.

Showing signs of obvious trauma, she was transported to a nearby hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries, the Bakersfield Californian further reports.

A family member who set up a GoFundMe for support, described Ger’mya  as “a beautiful smart sweet little girl” with the “brightest smile” who was “supportive, hardworking, and very understanding.”

“She always made those around her smile. At such a young age and so full of life she made a difference in everyone and cared deeply about the people she crossed,” the family member said.

“She was always a big help to her little brothers who will miss her dearly. She always wanted peace and never no negativity.  Mya was also such an spiritual little girl, always wanted to pray to GOD.”

Mason is set to be arraigned on March 30.
