Mickailia “Ila” Adu, the daughter of celebrated Nigerian-born British pop singer Sade Adu, is currently trending on social media after she announced that she is officially transitioning into a man.

The 20-year-old has been quite vocal about her desire to become a man. She has also been very open about her committed relationship to her female partner, according to AllAfrica.

Adu broke the news to her more than 3,000 Instagram followers on Tuesday, saying she had started taking male hormones to help reduce her breasts and make her look more masculine.

Adu reportedly suffers from “gender dysphoria,” a condition in which a person experiences discomfort or distress because there’s a mismatch between his or her biological sex and gender identity.

In the run-up to her transition, she posted pictures of herself on social media wearing male clothes and shoes.

Even with all the uproar on social media, Adu’s Grammy Award-winning mom has not issued any statement on her daughter’s gender decision.
