African content creators on YouTube have the chance to project various aspects of the continent through a newly launched initiative dubbed ‘Discover My Africa.’

The month-long campaign announced recently by Google and its African partners will allow creators from the continent to share short videos portraying African music, art, food and fashion, using the hashtag #DiscoverMyAfrica throughout the month of May.

The campaign according to Chido Mpemba, AU Chairperson’s youth envoy, formed part of the vision for “a digitally enabled Africa.” It is also meant to foster creative expression and dialogue on content responsibility, digital preservation, and AI’s impact on Africa’s creative industries.”

Afrobeats and Amapiano are set to take centre stage during Africa Month as YouTube hosts various events to spotlight the continent.

Reports indicate the platform had already unveiled two dedicated playlists titled “Africa’s Next Wave” and “Africa Superstars” to spotlight emerging and established acts.

“We are committed to supporting the diverse voices and talents that makeup Africa’s creative landscape. “These initiatives provide valuable resources and platforms for African filmmakers, musicians and content creators to share their stories and connect with global audiences,” Addy Awofisayo, YouTube Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, said in a statement.

“Discover My Africa” is described as part of Google’s annual efforts to honour African culture and heritage.” It previously held the Africa Day Concert hosted by YouTube Music and the Africa Day playlist featuring trending songs from across the continent.

As part of the African Month, Apple Music, recently announced Afrobeats act Fireboy DML as cover star for its Afrobeats Hits playlist.
