The family of a 63-year-old man, who died after a murder suspect allegedly carjacked and dragged him during a police chase, is blaming the Los Angeles Police Department for his death. According to KTLA, the fatal October 13 incident occurred in Inglewood.

The victim, identified as Larry Walker, was allegedly carjacked by a suspect who had engaged police in a pursuit. Walker’s body got stuck under his car after the suspect took control of his vehicle. The victim died after the suspect dragged his body for a number of miles.

Walker’s family has since called on the California Attorney General’s Office to initiate an independent investigation into the fatal incident. They also said the Los Angeles Police Department was negligent in his death.

“I do hold the man that killed my father responsible, but the operation and the way they attempted to apprehend that man was negligent,” the deceased man’s daughter, Jamien Walker, said. Walker’s sister-in-law, Hope Davis, also said the police should have “called that chase off” at “some point.” “You should’ve called it off,” she added.

The deceased man was said to be a prominent figure in his community. He helped operate a disability facility for adults in Inglewood. At a memorial that was organized in his honor, Jamien Walker said her father was “such a great man.” “He gave back to his community. He loved his family,” she added.

Walker’s wife, Gaynell Walker, also grieved the loss of her husband.  “Without him, just sitting in the living room is hard. Just sitting in the kitchen is hard.” she said. “The whole community is missing out.”

Walker’s family said they are currently not looking at filing any charges against the LAPD as they are trying to heal, KTLA. They also said they want to prevent an incident of such nature from occurring.

“This loss really hurt me because there’s a lot of people that claim to love you and care for you and be there for you, but this man really did,” Larry’s friend, Tiffanie Brown, said.

The suspect who carjacked Walker was ultimately arrested and taken into custody. He faces a slew of charges including murder.
