A New York family said they would still be standing by a relative who allegedly struck and killed his aunt with a broom. Per the New York Post, the suspect, identified as Alexander Fleming, used a broom to fatally strike his 55-year-old aunt Juanita Dallas in her Queens apartment.
The incident is said to have occurred on Tuesday, and Fleming had been barred from entering the apartment before the incident. Authorities said Fleming fatally struck his aunt during an episode of anger. Residents also said the suspect took drugs and had mental issues.
Weeks before the fatal incident, Fleming allegedly assaulted his deceased aunt’s landlord and also eased himself outside the property. But Fleming’s cousin, Dominique Mitchell, said Fleming would receive the necessary support from their family despite his actions.
“He is a 29 year-old kid who lost his dad before he was even born,” Mitchell said in reference to Fleming. “His life has been messed up since then. It’s been a lot of bad and sadness the last couple of years for him. He is one of my favorite human beings in the world. I have never given up on him. I’ve always tried to help him.”
Mitchell also said Dallas’ mother and 15-year-old son were present when Fleming killed his aunt. “He’s doing a lot better than what we were expected,” Mitchell said about Dallas’ son.
“He was her only child, her miracle baby. She had trouble having kids and then she finally had (him). They were close. We are going to surround him with love.”
Fleming, who has had several other run-ins with the law, has since been arrested and charged with murder. “He comes here, he urinates on my concrete,” Dallas’ landlord, Jainarine Chandick, told the New York Post.
“He s—s on my concrete. He smokes weed. I told him you can’t come here. He lifted his hand to hit me.”
