A Detroit father is devastated and mourning the loss of his wife and their 10-month-old son to suspected carbon monoxide poisoning on March 23. According to FOX 2 Detroit, the tragic incident occurred while mother and son were in a car waiting for a relative to complete a medical procedure.

The deceased, identified as Kellye Canty and 10-month-old Kanan, were at the Detroit Medical Center parking garage at the time of the incident. Police believe their cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning.

DeMarray Canty, who is the widower, married Kellye just last year. And shortly after their April 2021 wedding, the couple gave birth to Kanan.

“I just remember trying to be the best husband, fiance, partner,  whatever I could be, especially during the pregnancy and stuff, so,” Canty said. “It was perfect to be feeling of coming home to my family, it was kinda like magical.”

Kellye and Kanan were in a car waiting for her mother to complete a medical procedure at Harper Hospital when they passed away. That was after Kellye took her to the health facility. But following her doctor’s appointment, Kellye did not go for her mother.

“I ended up calling her, she didn’t answer – so I called her sister back to see if she had talked to her,” Canty recalled. “I asked did she have her location?”

Canty managed to locate the car at the medical facility, but he found his wife and son locked inside. “I just banged on the window calling her name – she wasn’t responding,” he said.

Canty, with some assistance from others, managed to break one of the car’s windows. “I got him out of the car seat and I held him and put him to my face,” he added. “I always put his face to my face – but his face was cold,” he said. “And I’m trying to wake him up.”

Kellye and Kanan were granted medical attention, but they couldn’t be resuscitated, FOX 2 Detroit reported.

Canty, who is still grappling to come to terms with the tragic loss, is just left with memories of their time together in their Detroit home. “All his toys, his sound machine comes on at 10 o’clock,  I still turn on his baby monitor,” he said.

A GoFundMe has since been set up to help raise funds for the grieving family.
