In 2017, Abbott wrote in The Guardian, saying, “I went into politics to create space for women and other groups who have historically been treated unfairly. Once, the pushback was against the actual arguments for equality and social justice. Now the pushback is the politics of personal destruction.”

A senior member of the Labour Party in the UK, Abbott’s efforts to theorize an inclusive political agenda for the UK are supported by many. Unsurprisingly, she is also a favorite target for many Conservatives and even some left-wingers who say she makes too much fuss about racism.

This year was one of the fiercest for Abbott who became the first black woman in UK history to answer parliamentary questions on behalf of a major party. She also defended her Hackney North and Stoke Newington seat in the 2019 UK elections.
