Authorities in Florida have charged a 54-year-old DeLand man with second-degree petit theft after he was seen helping himself with a pack of shrimp at a Publix store in The Villages.
According to ClickOrlando, the alleged theft is said to have occurred on the afternoon of Friday, March 14, and deputies arrived at the store after the incident was reported to authorities. The arrest report stated that upon arrival, the deputies learned that Londarel Harris was seen attempting to discard a pack of shrimp after initially opening it.
“An employee went and verified the discarded package was a Publix product,” the report stated. “They continued watching (Harris), who was traveling in a motorized chair.”
Investigators said that Harris was later prevented from going past the checkout lanes and made to return to the store. Besides the pack of shrimp, authorities said the manager also noticed Harris had consumed a Snicker bar and multiple amounts of sushi as he was moving around in the motorcart.
The total cost of the items were said to be over $45. “(Harris) is observed on camera placing these items in (his) bag, under two prescriptions that were purchased at the pharmacy,” deputies stated, per ClickOrlando.
Harris was ultimately placed into custody, and his bond was set at $7,500.
