Dave Chappelle has revealed during a San Francisco stand-up show that Saturday Night Live producers instructed him to avoid certain topics during his recent hosting gig.
“SNL producers told him he couldn’t speak about two topics: transgender people and Gaza,” reported SFGATE’s senior culture editor Dan Gentile.
Despite the restrictions, Chappelle managed to reference Palestine during his SNL monologue on January 18.
“Do not forget your humanity, and please have empathy for displaced people whether they’re in the Palisades or Palestine,” he declared.
During his show, Chappelle avoided further discussion on Gaza but closed with a sharp and provocative remark.
“Give the Jews a break, free Palestine,” he declared, per the SFGate.
Chappelle, who joked about wanting to avoid controversy during his January SNL monologue, said he was “tired of being controversial” and hoping to “turn over a new leaf.”
He is now set to return for SNL50: The Anniversary Special.
The three-hour live event will celebrate the show’s 50th anniversary with appearances from past stars like Adam Sandler, Amy Poehler, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, and Will Ferrell.
