3. Where?

Chale Wote is held in Ghana’s historic Jamestown community. Jamestown, a fishing community primarily inhabited by the Ga people; it’s an especially important district to Ghana’s heritage and culture as it is the site of many remnants of the country’s colonial past.

In fact, what makes Chale Wote really special is that it is truly a Jamestown community affair; businesses stationed on the route of the festival participate for free, making money from the large crowd the festival draws.

James Fort gave its name to the neighborhood where it stands, Jamestown. It was a British trading post in 1673 and stands next to Jamestown Lighthouse. From colonial times up to 2008 the fort served as a prison, even housing Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president during the colonial era and fight for freedom. Fort James gave its name to the Jamestown neighborhood in Accra.
