Inspired by their murdered colleague, these black women are running for office in Brazil

The 46-year-old evangelical pastor was fighting for more than 30 years for better housing conditions in the Rio de Janeiro favelas (slums) when she got a call from the late Franco to consider entering into institutional politics. She is now trying a seat in the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj) in this year’s elections. She believes that this is the time for more black women to serve.
