The music world is paying tribute to legendary producer and executive Irv Gotti, who has passed away at the age of 54. Hip-hop icons Ja Rule, Kanye West, Fat Joe, and others have expressed their grief over his death.
According to multiple reports, Gotti—founder of Murder Inc.—died on Wednesday, February 5, 2025. While the official cause of death has not yet been disclosed, he had battled diabetes and suffered multiple strokes in recent years.

Kanye West shared a dove emoji on Instagram alongside a news headline about Gotti’s passing.

Fat Joe also honored him on Instagram, writing: “What a genius. God bless you, Irv. Thank you for all you’ve done for hip-hop. You changed my life, and I will always love you. RIP.”
Russell Simmons, who worked with Gotti at Def Jam in the 1990s, penned a heartfelt tribute:
“Brothers and sisters, please don’t let Irv Gotti go without acknowledging the tragedy of his death and the struggles of Black men and women’s health in America. This talented, beautiful, happy, and curious spirit has left us far too soon. I’m sure God will receive him with love and freedom.”
Def Jam Recordings also released a statement recognizing his impact:
“His contributions to Def Jam, both as an A&R executive and in partnership with Murder Inc., helped pave the way for the next generation of artists and producers. His creative genius and unwavering dedication to the culture birthed countless hits, defining an era of music that continues to resonate with fans worldwide.”
Ruff Ryders, who credited Gotti with bringing their label to Def Jam, shared their condolences: “RIP to the legendary @irvgotti187. Our brother [????]. Our prayers are with his family.”
Rapper The Game reflected on his personal connection with Gotti:
“The first time I ever went to a big studio, you came to my baby mama’s house and picked me up. Then I rode with you and Gutta to edit an Ashanti video and talk about possibly signing a deal. You told me I was what the West Coast needed, but that I was better off with Dre—and you were right. Thank you for your contribution to hip-hop, homie. Fly high. Jamie Foxx also mourned Gotti in a now-deleted Instagram post: “Wow. Rest in power, my brother. Your music and legacy will never be forgotten. Irv, you spread so much love and wisdom to everyone you met. Rest up.”
