John Dramani Mahama, Ghana’s former president, is poised for a remarkable comeback after emerging victorious in the country’s 2024 general elections.
Although the Electoral Commission of Ghana has yet to make an official announcement, provisional results indicate that Mahama, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is ahead. The elections were held on Saturday, December 7, 2024.
According to provisional figures reported by Joy News, Mahama leads with 53% of the votes from 68 out of 276 constituencies. His main contender, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President and presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 45.16% in the preliminary results.
The NDC, however, claims a more decisive win. Based on its internal collation, the party reports that Mahama secured 56% of the vote, compared to Bawumia’s 41%.
In addition to the presidency, the NDC has asserted dominance in Ghana’s parliamentary race. During a press conference on Sunday, December 8, NDC National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi announced that the party had tentatively won 185 parliamentary seats nationwide.

“Our internal collation shows that the NDC has tentatively won 185 parliamentary seats. This reflects the overwhelming confidence Ghanaians have placed in us to represent them in Parliament,” Gyamfi said. He emphasized that the results signal a strong parliamentary majority, granting the NDC the mandate to advance its legislative agenda.
He also urged supporters to remain vigilant while awaiting the Electoral Commission’s official declaration.
Amidst this, celebratory scenes have unfolded across Ghana as NDC supporters take to the streets, reveling in Mahama’s presumed victory and the party’s parliamentary gains.
In a post on X, Mahama disclosed that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia had called to congratulate him. “I have, this morning, received a congratulatory call from my brother Dr @MBawumia, following my emphatic victory in Saturday’s election. Thank you, Ghana,” Mahama wrote.
