Fort Jesus
Built by Portuguese invaders in 1593, Fort Jesus has been a historic monument for the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa. It is built on a coral ridge at the entrance of the coastal harbor. In the period between 1837 and 1895, Fort Jesus was used by Portuguese soldiers as their barracks, but when the British protectorate was proclaimed in 1895, it was turned into a prison. Currently, the Fort serves as a National Museum and is one of the most-outstanding historic sites in Kenya.
