What was supposed to be a generous moment turned into disappointment when a fan uttered a white lie in an attempt to take advantage of Latto’s philanthropy.
Latto was feeling generous during her headline performance at ONE Musicfest in Atlanta, which was originally scheduled for October 27 as she stepped in for Cardi B, who had to cancel due to a medical emergency.
The rapper had planned to bless someone in the audience by paying their rent.
In a video circulating on social media, Latto asked a security guard to verify the ID of a fan who claimed it was their birthday.
From the stage, she requested, “Check her ID, boss man. Can you check his ID for me? If it ain’t your birthday, you f***d it up for everybody.”
When it turned out the birthday claim didn’t match the ID, Latto was visibly disappointed. She told the crowd:
“I was tryna pay rent,” before the DJ started playing her track ‘Big Mama’. The audience audibly expressed their frustration, but Latto shrugged it off.
This wasn’t Latto’s first attempt at a grand financial gesture. Just last month, she launched the ‘Brokey’ Challenge to engage fans, where she invited them to film videos dancing to her track ‘Brokey’ from the album Sugar Honey Iced Tea while working.
One submission that stood out came from Yadira Ramirez, a Waffle House employee who filmed herself and five coworkers dancing together during a shift, making the most of the challenge.
While the video went viral, it came with serious consequences, leading to Yadira’s termination just two days after posting the video.
However, the 25-year-old rapper quickly took notice of Yadira’s story, gave her a generous gift of $10,000, and invited Yadira to hang out in the studio, where they filmed content together and bonded.
According to HipHopDX, Latto’s charitable spirit follows the promotion of her latest album, ‘Sugar Honey Iced Tea’, which was released in August. The 21-track project features collaborations with Megan Thee Stallion, Ciara, Coco Jones, Young Nudy, and Teezo Touchdown.
The ‘Brokey’ artist, meanwhile, continues to balance her rising music career with efforts to connect with and uplift her fans in meaningful ways.
