After banning plastic bags, Kenya is now moving towards punishing anyone who litters the street.
A new directive by Nairobi County executive for Environment CEC Larry Wambua, anyone found littering the streets with candy wrappers and cigarette butts will now have to pay $50 or face up to six months in jail.
For those who dump huge solid wastes, they will be fined $1000, applicable each time the act is repeated or a one-year jail term.
The move is aimed at implementing waste management laws within Nairobi City.
“We will need to know if you are giving waste to the registered companies. If you fail to show us, it will attract a fine of Sh100,000 or spend one year in jail,” he said at a tree planting ceremony at Michuki Park, one of the parks within the city.
