Lizzo is refusing to describe her shedding of pounds as “weight loss” as she has another phrase for that.

During her April 7 interview with Jay Shetty on his On Purpose podcast, the Grammy-winner disclosed that she describes her body transformation as “weight release” and not “weight loss” because of how her fitness journey has positively impacted her.

“The weight that is no longer on me is not just fat or physical. I released so much to get to this point and I think people can see that and I don’t want to describe anything as loss,” she told Shetty, per TODAY.com. “I’m not experiencing any loss. I’ve actually gained so much.”

The 36-year-old also made mention of some of the benefits she has derived from her current diet and exercise plan. “I’ve gained, like, a sense of self. I’ve gained, like, a lifestyle that I actually really love and I’m like, ‘I can maintain this.’ I’ve gained new perspective on, like, nutrition and the science behind cardio and weight lifting,” Lizzo said.

The About Damn Time singer continued: “People aren’t going to understand this right now, but it’s the most body-positive way to experience what I’m going through. I don’t want to use any negative terms.”

Lizzo also showered praises on her boyfriend Myke Wright, saying that he inspired her to have a different overview of her body transformation journey. “My man, he’s so funny. He was the one who kind of like brought it to my attention at first because at first I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I lost five pounds.’ He was like (concerned face), ‘Where did it go?,’” she said while laughing.

She said her beau’s reaction somehow made her a bit “mad”, but it ultimately caused her to develop a new “interesting” perspective about her road to fitness, TODAY.com reported. “It was like, ‘I don’t think I want to lose anything,'” she said. “‘I think I want to win. I think I want to gain.'”

Lizzo also stated that she wanted to be “very intentional with the words that come out of my mouth.” She explained that was because “there’s young people who are watching me and they’re experiencing what I’m putting into the world and they’re applying it to their own experience and their own life just like I did when I was a kid.”

She highlighted that she “saw how the media treated people who gained and lost weight and how that effected my brain chemistry.”
