Authorities in Peoria, Illinois, have arrested and charged a 23-year-old man after he allegedly shot his ex-girlfriend “as a way to prove his love to his new girlfriend.”
In a statement, the Peoria County State’s Attorney said that the shooting happened in July, and the suspect, identified as Jaquon L. Timothy, was charged in connection with the incident last week.
Authorities said that the shooting occurred at the 2300 block of W. Starr Street in South Peoria on July 19, and officers made their way to the scene after receiving a Shotspotter alert. The responding officers found the victim with gunshot wounds to her feet, the statement said.
“Officers spoke to Timothy’s current girlfriend, and she reported that Timothy had told her before the shooting that he would shoot his ex-girlfriend,” the statement added. “She further noted that after the shooting, Timothy told her he had carried it out.”
Authorities ultimately obtained a search warrant for Timothy’s phone, and they came across a text message where the suspect claimed “ownership of the shooting.”
Authorities arrested Timothy on September 18 and charged him with aggravated battery with a firearm. A Peoria County judge also denied him bail pending trial.
