Authorities in Los Angeles have arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with the death of his one-year-old son at a motel in the Chesterfield Square neighborhood on July 13.

The victim’s mother, Ryanna Jones, told KTLA little Dee’ago Alexander Jones was fatally punched by his father after the minor tripped over a video game controller. Jones added that the accused, identified as Shane Flowers, admitted to the deadly assault.

Jones said the impact of Flowers’ punch caused Dee’ago to hit his head on the ground and subsequently pass out. Authorities also said the minor, who went into a medical distress as a result of the punch, was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“He told me that he didn’t think he hit him that hard for him to pass away,” Jones said. “And I kept telling him stop hitting my son. And every time I told him to stop, I got the outcome. I was getting beat up.”

The Los Angeles Police Department said Flowers was taken into custody the following day on suspicion of child abuse resulting in death. That was after Jones reported him to the police.

“I don’t know why he would run from this situation and just leave us there. And not come back,” Jones told KABC. “He didn’t even call to make sure he was even alive or OK…I just want him put away.”

Flowers’ bond was set at $100,000 following his arrest. “If you guys are in an abusive relationship then I suggest you leave because this is the outcome I got, my baby gone because of him,” Jones told KTLA.
