The only neurosurgeon in the whole of Liberia is 38-year-old Alvin Nah-Doe serving approximately five million people.

Nah-Doe is the only person qualified to carry out surgery on the brain in the country.

Although his specialty is brain surgery, he is often engaged in helping out with minor injuries.

“I can do brain surgery but we have so many minor injuries that need my intervention,” he told the BBC.

Late last year the young neurosurgeon led Liberia‘s first brain tumor removal surgery with an all-Liberian team at the JFK Medical Center in the capital, Monrovia.

The success of the surgery was a milestone in the medical history of the war ravaged country.

President George Weah took to Twitter to express his joy about the feat.

Nah-Doe was also part of the medical team that saved the life of an eight-year-old Liberian patient who was born with nasal encephalocele.

The country’s only neurosurgeon said he has no plans of leaving.

“If I leave this country there will be no-one… Being here to help our people as a patriot is something that I love doing,” he said.

According to the Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC) statistics, Medical specialty is limited for the country.

For years the Liberian government has been training specialized doctors to cater to the rising needs of illness in the country as most Liberians are reportedly unable to seek medical treatment abroad.
