During a recent appearance with his Light-Years producer DJ Premier on The Joe Budden Podcast, Nas touched on his 2012 track, Daughters, and fellow rapper Eminem declining his request to feature on the song.
The song, which is on Nas’ Life Is Good album, is about the relationship between the 52-year-old rapper and his then-teenage daughter, Destiny Jones, Complex reported.
“Every record I do is not a battle,” Nas, whose real name is Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones, said. “I remember I had sent this song ‘Daughters’ to Eminem and at the time he had spent so much time speaking on daughters … he was like, ‘Thank you, but I’m not going to.'”
“‘I’m not doing any more songs directly about daughters at the moment because that’s a sensitive issue with all the music I put out,” the Grammy-winner said. “I think the message was like, ‘Thank you, ’cause most people want to do songs where they’re battling me on a record. It was refreshing to get a record where you’re not coming for me.'”
Nas, who is known by various stage names including Nasty Nas and Escobar, achieved critical acclaim with his 1994 debut album, Illmatic. He won his first Grammy in 2021 for his King’s Disease album.
Despite declining to feature on Daughters, Eminem, 53, is no stranger to releasing songs about his family. His 2004 Mockingbird single, which is about his daughter, Hailie Jade, is a fan favorite.
His mother and ex-partner have also been at the receiving end in some diss songs that he has released.

In 2023, Face2Face Africa reported that Nas and comedian Tracy Morgan shed tears after they learned that they shared the same DNA.
Making the revelation on the Connect The Dots podcast, the comedian said he and Nas discovered a familial connection during an episode of the PBS series Finding Your Roots.
The 57-year-old comedian said he found the deeper connection surprising given that they have been friends for a long time.
Morgan, discussing their longstanding friendship on the Connect The Dots podcast, recounted his close bond with Nas even before discovering their familial connection. He alluded to their collaboration on a Comedy Central show called One Mic, dedicated to Nas’ late mother.
He also shared Nas’ emotional reaction upon learning about their profound familial link.
“I called him up, and I say, ‘Yo Esco,’ he said, ‘What up Trey?’” Morgan recalled. “And I said, ‘I just did ‘Finding Your Roots.’ Me and you related.”
The comedian said both of them couldn’t hold back their tears when they learned that they share similar DNA.
“He started crying, I started crying,” Morgan recalled. “And I said to him, ‘If you ever need me, I’m there, Cuz.’ He said, ‘Cuz, if you ever need me, I’m there.”
