NBA player and Khloé Kardashian’s on-and-off boyfriend Tristan Thompson has filed for guardianship of his disabled younger brother, 17-year-old Amari Thompson, after the sudden death of their mother. According to Radar, their mother, Andrea Thompson, passed away in January at her Toronto home after suffering cardiac arrest.

Legal documents obtained by TMZ reveal that Tristan took over the responsibilities of caring for Amari after their mother died. The documents also stated that 32-year-old Tristan was his sibling’s closest living relative and that their father, Trevor, had not been actively involved in Amari’s life since 2014.

17-year-old Amari has several medical diagnoses, including epilepsy, that leave him unable to care for himself as he requires around-the-clock assistance with his daily needs and medical appointments.

TMZ also noted that the legal documents include a notice that said Amari is to receive approximately $103,475 as inheritance as a result of Andrea’s death, which Tristan seeks to protect.

“Amari is a minor and has medical conditions that render him unable to take care of himself or seek gainful employment,” the court documents said, according to People.

The teen lives with Tristan at his Hidden Hills, California home. Tristan indicated his plans to apply for U.S. citizenship for Amari, who is Canadian by birth, in the court documents.

He also shared his plans to enroll Amari in social and extracurricular activities, travel internationally with him, and decide the living arrangements for Amari.

“Appointing a guardian for Amari would be in his best interest because it would ensure that someone would be responsible for providing and fulfilling his basic needs,” the statement noted.

The petition has yet to be decided by a judge.
