Authorities in the Nigerian city of Lagos said the body of Afrobeats star MohBad has been exhumed in the wake of the controversy surrounding the 27-year-old’s death, BBC reported. The singer passed away in a Lagos hospital on September 12, but he was hastily buried.
His cause of death has, however, not been disclosed. This has led fans to petition authorities to look into the circumstances of his death. “Exhumation completed. Autopsy to commence,” Lagos state police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin shared on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter.
The singer, whose real name is Ilerioluwa Aloba, was initially signed to Naira Marley’s Marlian Records. But he parted ways with his boss following a highly publicized feud. In the wake of his death, a section of Nigerians allegedly called out Naira Marley for his harsh treatment of the singer when they parted ways.
His death has since triggered rallies in southern Nigeria as fans and sympathizers are calling for justice. People on social media have been using the hashtag #justiceformohbad to call on authorities to get to the bottom of the matter. That hashtag has also been trending on social media.
In a previous interview, Nigerian singer Bella Shmurda revealed MohBad once attempted suicide because of his contractual issues with Marlian Records. Shmurda said his late friend was battling depression at the time, Punch reported.
“I do not want to say this but I will. I and Mohbad were in an apartment when he suddenly said he felt like jumping from the floor we were on, downstairs all because of the issues he was having with his label,” Shmurda told media personality Chude Jideonwo in the January interview.
“It was his girlfriend who came to alert us that he was at the edge of his window and was about to jump to his death.
“Anything that will make anyone attempt to take their own life is extreme and when it does happen, these people will join the many tweeting RIP.”
