The governor of Nigeria’s Anambra State, Charles Soludo, has denied claims about his administration’s intent to start arresting women who do not wear bras and panties in the southeastern state, Premium Times Nigeria reported.

Soludo’s response came after a group of suspected local security forces identified as Agunechemba announced last week that women spotted outside without bras and panties in Anambra State were going to be arrested

A video of the security forces publicizing the supposed plan via a public address system was shared on X. In the video posted on Sunday, one of the security operatives is reportedly heard making the announcement in their local Igbo language, claiming that Governor Soludo rolled out the mandate.

But reacting to the report in a Monday statement via his spokesperson, the governor categorically denied that claim and said it was “entirely false information.”

“We wish to categorically state that this information is not only false but also mischievous and calculated to mislead the public and paint the state government in bad light,” he said.

Soludo also said his administration will not refrain from their continued effort in ensuring that citizens’ fundamental human rights and dignity remain protected, Premium Times Nigeria reported.

“Although the government encourages decent dressing for all, it does not interfere with citizens’ personal choices of clothing or undergarments, as such matters are private and protected by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the governor emphasized.

The governor entreated the people of Anambra State to pay no heed to the “fake news.” He also called on the people spreading the fake report to refrain from doing that so as to curtail the propagation of panic and unrest among Anambra residents.

“The Anambra State Government will continue to focus on serious issues of security of lives and property, human capital development, economic transformation of the state, and urban regeneration agenda, among others,” the governor stated.
