Pauletta Washington, wife of actor Denzel Washington, has provided some peek into what has kept their marriage for over four decades.
She granted an interview at the premiere of the upcoming movie The Piano Lesson, which their 33-year-old son, Malcolm Washington, directs.
Mr. and Mrs. Washington tied the knot in June 1983, and now Pauletta believes ālots of prayersā and ābasic loveā for one another has been a key ingredient in their long-lasting relationship.
āWe work at itā¦Itās not that you sit there and you go like, āOh, you knowā¦There are a lot of prayers for strength for staying in a forgiveness mode and both parts, mine and his. But itās the basic love that we have for each other,ā she stated.
Paulettaās remarks attracted commendation from some social media users who urge them to keep up the spirit of the union.
āBlack love what a beautiful thing!ā¦āA marriage that put God first. God bless them,ā some fans wrote on Instagram.ā
Pauletta had previously stated why she chose Denzel as her partner in an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show on their thirteenth marriage anniversary.
āI thought he was cute, but I loved his spirit. Thatās what I saw first, and then I thought, ānot a bad package,ā she stated.
Denzel and Pauletta have had four children between 1984 and 1991 with some of their wards playing active roles in the movie industry.
The Piano Lesson is described as āa full family affairā as Pauletta and some of her children appear on set. Denzel Washington and Katia Washington also serve as producers.
āThis movie is so personal to me, and the people that I got to make it with are the closest people in my life,ā she said about the production, scheduled for release on November 8, and streaming later on Netflix on Nov. 22.
