Poem: Ode to Loss

pain

How do you deal with loss?

You. Yes, you.
Do you shut it out; throw your head back and swallow the pain for fear of tasting it, like we did with drugs when we were kids?
Or do you shove it down this deep, dark abyss we call “hurt”?

You know pain comes in various shades: There’s one that crushes your heart into tiny fragments with jagged edges. There’s another kind that gently seeps into your bowels until you’re full and unable to take any more.

Do you ever notice how your eyes light up the moment you see someone who shares the same hue of pain with you?
It’s amazing the gentle tug at your heart to allow them to run their hand over your wounds.

How do you handle the rush of memory that hits you when you least expected it.
Do you make imaginary conversations with them?
Or laugh like you would around them?
If you lose your mind, would you even know?
