The internet went wild when a video of a barking dog appeared on top of Egypt’s Great Pyramid of Giza. The moment was captured by a man paragliding over the Egyptian landmark.
When Marshall Mosher zoomed in on the top of the pyramid as he flew in a paramotor above the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the World, he was shocked to see the dog leisurely going about its day.
Mosher wrote in the top caption of the post, “A dog climbed all the way up the Great Pyramid of Giza! Do you think he lives up there?”
The clip immediately went viral, garnering over 9000 likes. His comments were flooded with jokes and speculations. One commenter stated, “Not a dog. That is the egiptian [Egyptian] God Anubis. He is considered the guide of the dead in the afterlife and the protector of the tombs. That’s why it is over the piramid [pyramid],” while another said, “if he pees there all Egypt belongs him.”
In an update, Mosher allayed the concerns of some commenters who questioned the dog’s safety. The explorer declared in the follow-up video that he was returning to the sky to locate and save the dog. However, he subsequently informed fans that the dog had disappeared and speculated that it might have descended on its own.
This sparked another torrent of reactions from netizens. Some commended him for trying to check, while others chastised him for going the following day rather than saving the puppy as soon as he noticed him.
In another video, the daredevil attempted to explain that the dogs live nearby and frequently climb up and down the 454-foot Great Pyramid of Giza.
Meanwhile, @retreatours shared a fresh video, which Mosher reposted with the description, “The famous dog of the Great Pyramids was finally seen coming back down after his morning climb by @retreatours. Do you think he lives up there?” The legendary “pyramid dog” was shown casually climbing down the structure.
This was met with relief from social media users. One person remarked, “Phew, I was so worried. Thank you for keeping an eye out for this little legend,” while another joked, “Been following the dog story like it’s a national event!”
Although there are no laws prohibiting dogs or other animals from climbing the pyramids, according to Hyperallergic, Egypt’s parliament made it illegal in 2019 to climb the country’s monuments. The penalty is at least one month in jail and/or a fine of between EGP 10,000 (~$620) and EGP 100,000 (~$6,200), which is doubled if the act is considered to be in violation of public decency.
It appears that the dog, which some have dubbed “Anubis,” has won a place in the hearts of netizens and has helped make the daring adventurer famous overnight.
As one commenter declared, “he’s the real prince of egypt.”
