She was my friend but also my bully – Couple share how their love story began in kindergarten

A lovely six-year marriage has sprung from a kindergarten romance. Availa Searles, the 5-year-old daughter of Jaida and Jabari Searles, is currently attending the same school where the couple met.

Knowing exactly how her parents met, Availa questions whether her destiny will be the same.

“She asked that before she started kindergarten! She did. She asked us, she said, ‘Mom, will I find my husband like how you found daddy?’ She asked Jabari that, too, as well,” her mother, Jaida Searles, told KUSA.

Jaida and Jabari Searles, a Colorado couple, first connected in kindergarten at Aurora’s Mission Viejo Elementary School. The two became friends quickly after meeting in Ms. Hebert’s class when they were young.

They recently took a trip down memory lane to “that moment” in their old classroom, when they first met many years ago.

Jabari Searles said, “She was my friend, but she was also my bully a little bit at times.”

According to Jaida, their relationship soon grew into childhood romances around second grade.

She recalled, “I started liking Jabari a lot. And that’s when I remember myself kind of running around on the playground, kicking him.”

During their visit to the school, they came across a yearbook in which Jabari Searles had written a touching note to his crush.

The message read, “Jaida, I have grown to love you no matter how mean you are. Just kidding. I’m going to miss you more than any other girl.”

With that note in front of him, Jabari Searles jokingly said, “So clearly I was in love back then.”

Though they attended different schools after elementary school, the two remained in touch over the years.

Jabari then seized his opportunity while they were young adults.

“I would say it was when we were about 20 or 21, I just happened to message her on Instagram… I started talking to her every day. And once we started hanging out, we just instantly knew that we were going to be together forever,” he recounted.

Finally, in 2019, the couple tied the knot. At their wedding, the minister read an entry from Jaida Searles’ fourth-grade journal.

“I think I love Jabari. I don’t think I could love any boy more. I’m only 10, and I know it’s too early to talk about love. But sooner or later, I will be grown,” the note read.

Meanwhile, Jabari Searles hopes he won’t have to deal with their daughter’s questions about finding a partner in school for a while.

“I wasn’t ready for that question at all. I’m still kind of working through those emotions and processing. It’s like, I hope you do, but also, I hope [we] don’t have to think about that for a long time,” he confessed.
