Shyla Brown is the number one ranked African American Junior Golfer at just 15 years old

At 15 years old, Shyla Brown is already the number one ranked African American Junior Golfer. Brown found her passion for the sport at age 8 because she saw her parents do it.

“You know, when you’re that young, you kind of take up what your parents are doing. I found it enjoyable,” Brown told WFAA.

Brown is one of four nationally ranked high school golfers who played in the Southwest Airlines Showcase at Cedar Crest, a golf competition that pits the best amateur players in the country against one another. The event’s venue has historical ties to pioneers like Charles Sifford, who broke the color barrier for the PGA Tour.

“It means a lot to me. The history behind Cedar Crest that’s been held there… Pioneers like Charles Sifford, walking in his footsteps, it means a lot to me,” Brown remarked.

Brown was named to the 2023 American Junior Golf All-Star Team, making her the second African American in history to receive such an honor. She attributes her success in her career to her consistency.

“To much is given; much is required. The more blessings that are given to me, the more responsibilities I hold to uphold those blessings,” Brown expressed.

Brown resides in McKinney and plays at the Dye Golf Course at Stonebridge Ranch. Her coaches, fellow players, and family all motivate her to improve. She explained that seeing them succeed spurs her on.

Brown maintains her focus on her goal of becoming a professional player while juggling school, marching band, practice, and tournaments.

“I want to get through college. Go professional and not even just get on the tour. Be one of the greatest,” Brown stated.
