James Baldwin
The racist and homophobic reality in America forced Baldwin, a gay black man, to leave the country and head to France. He was able to write quite a number of books and poems with Giovanni Room earning him critical acclaim. He was an outspoken advocate of Gay and Lesbian Rights and other civil rights.
