So You Want To Be A Magician?

by Eunice Poku, 12:00am August 19, 2011,

Abracadabra! Hocus Pocus! Alakazam! Now the first thing that may come to mind is Harry Potter but this is not about a movie. These are words that are common vernacular at the College of Magic located in Cape Town, South Africa.

So You Want To Be A Magician?

College of Magic, CoM, is the first institution of its kind offering degree programs in Magic. The College was started in February 1980 and its founder and Executive Director, David Gore has made a strong impact on his students from all over the world.

What makes CoM unique is that it is the only institution offering six year degree programs in Magic. CoM accepts children as young as 10 years old and adults in their course curriculum. The student body consists of both male and female students and most of the staff consists of volunteers who are former students.

Even more interesting is the underprivileged children who have benefited from an education at the CoM. Magic in the Community Project, is a program that allows a group of students to be transported for weekly lessons from their impoverished homes in the Cape Flats to the College. Generous sponsors such as Siegfried and Roy are huge contributors to this project.  This project gives students the opportunity to get off the streets and earn extra money on the side entertaining audiences.

The curriculum includes presentation skills, theory of entertainment, and audience participation. And with lessons such as ventriloquism, juggling, mime, and clowning there is no doubt that this college is exceptional in every way.
