Registering a religion – Eritrea
For many, becoming a member of a religious group does not require a lot of work. This is not the case in Eritrea. In a decree passed in 2002, the country in East Africa requires the religious groups to submit personal information on their membership before they are allowed to conduct religious activities including worship and fellowship.
So far, Eritrea recognises four major religious groups: Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Lutheran-affiliated Evangelical Church of Eritrea, as well as Islam. Although the other groups submitted their registration details in 2002, the government has yet to act on it.
