Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry and celebrated chef Michael Mina are teaming up on a steakhouse and bar venture in San Francisco.
Mina is set to open a new location of his steakhouse chain Bourbon Steak inside The Westin St. Francis at Union Square in October, while Curry is also getting ready to open a reservations-only bar called Eighth Rule across the lobby.
The new projects mark Curry’s first hospitality project and Mina’s return to the location where he opened the first Michael Mina restaurant in 2004, according to SFGate.
Curry’s Eighth Rule, which will have only 40 seats, is a bourbon-focused bar, and it comes two years after the NBA star launched his bourbon brand, Gentleman’s Cut.
The name of the bar is derived from the seven official rules of bourbon production, and Curry is now inviting guests to define their own eighth rule.
“Creating my own bourbon brand paired with my friendship with Michael is like a master class in hospitality!” Curry said in a news release. “I’ve always dreamt of creating my own little haven to bring people together, and now we have the perfect location. I cannot wait for people to come and see what we have in store.”
Mina and Curry initially met when the chef worked with Ayesha Curry to open International Smoke in San Francisco in 2017.
Black celebrities, including NBA stars, have in recent years combined their craft with entrepreneurship. They have ventured into multiple businesses, including owning record labels, restaurants, and real estate, among others.
Curry’s Gentleman’s Cut Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey was launched in 2023, and it was his first foray into the spirits industry. “Celebrations take on many different forms, from intimate gatherings to major milestones, and at the center of each memorable moment is a spirit rooted in history and tradition,” Curry shared in a statement at the time. “I’m proud to have helped carefully craft a new signature Kentucky Straight Bourbon, Gentleman’s Cut. This rich, complex, and bold bourbon is the perfect offering to commemorate life’s great occasions and will be part of a raised-glass toasting moment in the lives of my fans, friends, and family.”
Since joining the Warriors, Curry has consistently ranked among the highest-paid players. Curry started with the Warriors in 2009 as the seventh overall pick in the draft and has since accumulated a huge fortune.
In August 2024, the NBA superstar agreed to sign a one-year, $62.6 million extension with the Golden State Warriors, which keeps him in a Warriors uniform through the 2026-2027 season. It was reported that the contract will also make him the first NBA player to make $60 million in a season.
With successful off-court businesses in various sectors, Curry recently entered into a new agreement with Under Armour, a sports apparel company, a deal that will continue even after his retirement.
