Katumba, Tanzania

With a population of about 66,000, Katumba has been described as one of the oldest refugee camps in the world, dating back to 1972. It was established to host Burundian citizens who were fleeing Hutu genocide that was largely carried out by the Burundian government. In the early 2000s, the Tanzanian government managed to reduce the number of people at the camp while offering most residents repatriation or naturalization in Tanzania.
