Carol Moseley Braun

Carol Moseley Braun was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives who changed history by winning an election in Nov. 3, 1992, making her the first black woman in the United States Senate and the second African American elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate.

She would later become the U.S. ambassador to New Zealand in 1999 and served until the end of President Bill Clinton’s term.

In 2003, she announced her bid to run for president on the Democratic ticket, but then dropped out of the race in January 2004 and endorsed Howard Dean who also lost his bid.
