Dahomey Amazon warriors
This group of strong-willed female fighters from ancient Africa inspired the recent Black Panther movie centuries after its existence. The Dahomey Amazon warriors existed in the mighty kingdom of Dahomey between the 15thh to the 17th century until the collapse of the Dahomey Kingdom. Set up in the 15th century by the ruling King Huegbadja, the all-female warrior group demonstrated fearlessness and strength fighting to protect their kingdom. The warriors enjoyed privileges and royal treatment from the King and were highly respected by the people. They empowered young girls and women and elevated the social status of women in society. Originally called Nonmiton, which means Our Mothers in fon, the Dahomey Amazon warriors can boast of powerful warriors like Seh-Dong-Hong-Beh who joined the Warriors at an early age and led them to war by the age of 16.
