A family is mourning the loss of their 10-year-old son, who was killed in an accident with an oil tanker in East Nashville.
The boy, Dsiyahn Whitmore, was described as an exuberant student at Nashville Northeast Elementary who had no shyness and enjoyed being the center of attention. His family went on to say that he loved music, sports, and joking about, and that his smile will be missed.
His elder sister, Mariyana Mayfield, holding on to the memories, told WSMV, “He was always the class clown. He was the light in so many people’s lives. He made an impact on everybody that he encountered. Though he lived a short time, he was a very curious and adventurous child.”
According to his family, the 10-year-old was supposed to be at a Main Street gas station with friends, grabbing candy. However, as the grownups went inside, he was left alone on a gas-powered minibike.
“He was not driving the motorbike. He was left unattended. And he did what any child would do out of pure curiosity,” Mayfield said.
According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, he managed to accelerate the bike onto the road, colliding with the back passenger side of a tanker truck. He was pronounced dead on the scene, according to reports.
According to the family and the police, they are trying to determine who was with Disyahn that evening and who owned the bike.
“He was abandoned. He was left alone on the street by some unknown person. And he deserved better,” Mayfield said.
As they wait for answers, his family, especially his two younger siblings, are concerned over how they will cope without him.
“They looked up to him so much. I wouldn’t be the woman I am today if he didn’t make me a big sister,” Mayfield stated.
“There will always be a hole that only he can fill. But I know he’s not coming back,” the grieving sister added.
