The former vice president of DRC was charged with rape as a crime against humanity and rape and pillaging as war crimes.
Bemba’s case was a milestone for the ICC, which had for the first time considered rape as a weapon of war.
During the trial, unwanted pregnancies and children born out of rape during the crisis were identified. The court in 2016 had listened to testimonies on how the fighters had assaulted them.
