Shelby in 2016 fatally shot and killed an unarmed black man, Terence Crutcher. He was 40.

A jury acquitted Shelby in a first-degree manslaughter case brought against the former white Tulsa police officer.

Following the acquittal, she petitioned to have the record erased, a request District Judge William LaFortune granted, further ordering all documents involving the case to be sealed and kept with the court. The case documents could only be accessed via a court order. It could also be destroyed after 10 years.
