The United States on Tuesday won silver in women’s gymnastics after star Simone Biles had to drop out of the team final in Tokyo. The U. S. had hopes of winning their third straight championship but things didn’t go as they wished as the Russian Olympic Committee won gold and the British team won bronze.
A statement from USA gymnastics said Biles withdrew due to a medical issue. “She will be assessed daily to determine medical clearance for future competitions,” the statement said.
Biles, who had qualified for all finals, was expected to compete in individual all-round, floor exercise, uneven bars, beam and vault.
The 24-year-old performed just one vault attempt on Tuesday before huddling with a trainer and leaving the competition floor with a team doctor. After some minutes, she came back with her right leg wrapped.
Gymnastics’ ruling body the FIG later said on Twitter: “After one routine Simone Biles will sit out the rest of the women’s team final”.
The star had in an Instagram post on Monday said she sometimes feels like she has “the weight of the world” on her shoulders.
