Waldemar Bastos

He was born in the Angolan/Congolese borderlands but fled his homeland in 1982 during the fierce post-independence civil war, moving first to Lisbon, then West Berlin, then Brazil, where he recorded his first album, Estamos Juntos. In 1985 in Lisbon, Bastos released two more albums before gaining popularity with his 1997 album, Pretaluz, recorded in New York for Luaka Bop.

Since 2003, he has been coming back to his homeland where he is still adored by many for his universal style of Lusophone music. Some of his records include Estamos Juntos (EMI Records Ltd., 1983), Angola Minha Namorada (EMI Portugal, 1989), Pitanga Madura (EMI Portugal, 1992) and Pretaluz [blacklight] (Luaka Bop, 1997).

Others are Renascence (World Connection, 2004), Love Is Blindness (2008) and Classics of my Soul (WB Music, 2010).
