The African movie industry has developed in so many ways and today is enjoying world recognition. Earlier this year, Nigerian actress- now director, Genevieve Nnaji’s film Lionheart made waves when Netflix announced that it had acquired world rights to the movie.

As modern African movies continue to break boundaries, we cannot forget many other films that set off the industry on the continent, showing the world that it has great talent and even greater stories.

There are several movies from every country that continue to be passed on from generation to generation; others have warmed their way into the hearts of many Africans outside their borders and the world. They are quite popular and it would be seen as a shock if you have not watched it.

In no particular order, here are 10 classical movies from Africa that have gained global attention and that have been or should be seen by almost every African at least once in their lifetime.
