Airports are a necessary part of travel, but for many passengers, they are also a source of significant stress. Long security lines, confusing layouts, and overcrowded terminals can turn what should be a smooth journey into a nerve-racking experience.

Some airports, due to their sheer size or the volume of passengers they handle, are particularly notorious for causing frustration. Here’s a look at some of the world’s most stressful airports and why they pose challenges for travelers.

1. London Gatwick Airport (LGW), UK
London Gatwick tops the list as the most stressful airport, handling 32.8 million passengers in 2023. A significant delay rate of 41.1%, combined with a crowded terminal design, contributes to its stress score of 52.00. With 6.7 million passengers per square kilometer, Gatwick’s compact layout can be overwhelming, particularly during peak travel times. Despite efforts to enhance efficiency, the airport remains a tough environment for travelers, especially those with tight connections or unfamiliarity with the layout.

2. Istanbul Airport (IST), Türkiye
Istanbul Airport, which saw 64.2 million passengers last year, ranks second with a stress score of 42.79. Despite its modern infrastructure and expansive space, the airport struggles with a 31.5% delay rate. The vast size of the airport often means long walks between terminals, which can be particularly stressful for those trying to make tight connections. Travelers unfamiliar with the facility’s layout can find it difficult to navigate, adding to the overall sense of anxiety.

3. Munich Airport (MUC), Germany
Munich Airport serves 31.6 million passengers annually and has a stress score of 40.43. Despite its reputation for efficiency, nearly half of all flights (49.2%) experience delays, which significantly affects passengers. The airport’s two-terminal design, while efficient for local travelers, can be challenging for those unfamiliar with its layout or facing tight layovers. Munich’s high delay rate remains a source of frustration for many travelers.

4. Denver International Airport (DEN), USA
Denver International, despite its spacious layout, ranks fourth with a stress score of 39.60. The airport handles 69.2 million passengers a year, and its location in the Midwest contributes to frequent weather-related delays, with 20.9% of flights running late. Denver’s enormous size means long walks between gates and terminals, adding to the stress for passengers needing to make connections. Additionally, construction aimed at modernizing the airport creates further confusion for travelers.

5. Heathrow Airport (LHR), UK
London’s Heathrow Airport, one of the busiest in the world, serves 61.6 million passengers annually. With a stress score of 37.13, Heathrow’s challenges include a high delay rate of 40.5% and a sprawling five-terminal layout. Long security lines and frequent flight delays make navigating Heathrow daunting, even for experienced travelers. Despite its modern facilities, the airport’s scale and congestion make it a top contender for causing stress, particularly during peak travel periods.

6. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), USA
LAX, one of the busiest airports in the U.S., handles 65.9 million passengers annually and has a stress score of 36.44. Known for its confusing layout and ongoing construction projects, the airport’s 19.02% delay rate further adds to travelers’ frustrations. The sprawling design often leads to long walks between terminals, and construction-related detours frequently exacerbate confusion. For those unfamiliar with LAX, navigating the airport can be an exhausting experience.

7. Fiumicino International Airport (FCO), Italy
Rome’s Fiumicino Airport ranks seventh on the list, handling 29.3 million passengers a year with a stress score of 35.12. A 28.8% delay rate and a layout that still presents challenges despite recent improvements contribute to the stress. Long walks between terminals and crowded gates, especially during the busy tourist season, make navigating Fiumicino difficult. The airport’s frequent delays and logistical issues cause anxiety for many travelers passing through this historically significant city.

8. Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), USA
Dallas Fort Worth International Airport ranks eighth, serving 73.3 million passengers annually with a stress score of 34.12. Though the airport is known for its five-terminal design connected by a rail system, navigating the vast space can still be challenging for travelers unfamiliar with it. The airport’s delay rate of 20.67% adds further stress, particularly for those with short layovers. The long distances between gates make DFW difficult to traverse quickly, increasing the anxiety for time-sensitive passengers.

While these airports are major global hubs, they present significant stressors for travelers due to high passenger volumes, frequent delays, and complicated layouts. However, passengers can mitigate some of these stress factors by planning ahead, allowing extra time to navigate terminals, and staying informed about potential delays. Understanding what to expect can help ease the pressure of passing through these high-stress environments.
