Mr. Boe Hall has fondly earned the nickname “Waving Man of Maplesville.” The 78-year-old resident of the Chilton County town of Maplesville has made it a habit of offering a warm hello to passersby while sitting in an old chair.

Hall, a retired logger who has spent all his life in this community, lives alone in his trailer. His regular habit of waving at anyone who walks by makes him happy and helps him cope with his loneliness.

He told WVTM13, “It’s my enjoyment. I just come out here when I get tired of sitting around the house.”

Hall sits by the rails every day, greeting everyone with a wave of his withered hand. His heartfelt actions, no matter how little, have not gone unappreciated.

Hall is consistently in the same location, whether it’s 7:00 in the morning or occasionally as early as 5:30, according to a neighbor by the name of Gary Mayfield. And every time a car or truck drives by, the gesture is always returned with a pleasant hello or a honk.

Mayfield noted, “He doesn’t have to know your name or what kind of vehicle you’re driving. He’ll throw up his hand and wave anyway—showing respect.”

Another resident remarked, “He makes you happy. Makes my day. I think he makes other people’s day too.”

Hall disclosed that he has experienced the loss of numerous siblings and has never been married or had children.

And when the reporter mentioned that Hall appeared to be a “happy guy,” he replied, “I stay happy. I ain’t got nothing to worry about!”

“The good Lord will take care of me!”
