When Kenya’s president, Uhuru Kenyatta approved a law in 2014 allowing men to marry more than one wife, many female lawmakers condemned it.
Under the legislation, civil law where a man was only allowed one wife, was brought in line with the customary law, where some cultures and societies allow multiple partners. The law sparked negative reactions from the general public, particularly church leaders and feminists.
But four years into this, a female lawmaker in the country has mounted a strong defence of the polygamy law.
Gathoni Wa Muchomba has encouraged men to marry more wives, saying that would solve problems of single motherhood, infidelity and divorces.
The Kiambu Woman Representative argues bringing up children, without their fathers, has contributed to social problems among the youth.
“As much as we are talking about our church and our culture, we must go back to the drawing board and get solutions to some of these problems.
“Let all able men marry more than one wife and bring up children…go ahead and marry even five wives,” she was quoted by local media The Star.
The MP was speaking on Saturday during an enrolment of alcohol addicts into rehab.
