A grieving New York City mother has called her daughter’s yet-to-be-captured killer a “coward” after he fatally shot the 36-year-old victim following what her family described as a baseless argument at a barbecue.
According to the New York Post, Tamika Powell, a mother of two, was at a barbecue near the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Wednesday night when she got into an argument with the unidentified gunman, her mother, Norma Campbell, said.
“She showed up at the barbecue. At about 10 or 15 minutes at the barbecue, she had an argument with somebody,” Campbell recalled. “After the argument, Tamika left and the guy went into his apartment…came back out with a mask. He put on the mask and left in the direction Tamika left. There was a moment of quiet…and that’s when they heard the one shot.”

The suspect is said to have shot Powell in the head before fleeing the scene. “People ran to the other direction of the sound to see what was going on and saw Tamika in the middle of the street,” Campbell said.
Campbell made her way to the scene after her other daughter notified her about what had occurred. Her deceased daughter’s body was still at the scene when she arrived.
Per the New York Post, the Prospect Heights neighborhood is not really a violent area. “When the call came, I couldn’t believe it because she grew up in this neighborhood and is loved over here. Everyone knows her,” said Campbell.
Campbell also had some strong words for the suspect, saying that she hopes he rots in prison and dies a “slow and painful death” when he’s apprehended.
“You are a coward,” she said. “If you are bold enough to take a life then come forward.”
